Tata Motors is developing a ground-up mid-size SUV, internally codenamed Kuno, to expand its midsize EV portfolio and challenge the MG Windsor, according to people familiar with the programme.
Scheduled for introduction in 2027-2028, the approximately 4.3-metre vehicle is likely to be manufactured at Sanand in Gujarat. Annual production of around 80,000–100,000 units is being planned, the people said.
Kuno will target family buyers seeking space, comfort and everyday practicality. It will complement the Curvv’s coupe-SUV proposition and Sierra’s lifestyle positioning, giving Tata Motors another body style with which to address midsize EV customers.
The vehicle will flank the new-generation Nexon, codenamed Garud, Curvv and Sierra. Its commercial name, final specifications and pricing have not been disclosed.
Sanand’s Role as an EV Hub Grows
The likely allocation of Kuno would strengthen Sanand’s position as a major electric vehicle manufacturing hub for Tata Motors.
The Gujarat base comprises the company’s original factory and the neighbouring former Ford plant. Tata Motors is preparing capacity additions there to accommodate higher volumes and future products.
The annual production plan of 80,000–100,000 units indicates the scale being considered for Kuno. It is not a first-year sales forecast; actual output will depend on demand and the pace of the ramp-up.
Manufacturing the vehicle at Sanand would allow Tata Motors to use its existing infrastructure and supplier network as it broadens its electric range.
A Family-Focused Alternative
Kuno is intended to attract mid-size SUV buyers considering the Windsor and other monocoque EVs, according to people familiar with the plans.
Its ground-up electric design gives engineers greater freedom to package the battery, motors and cabin than a vehicle developed to accommodate both electric and combustion powertrains.
Passenger accommodation, luggage space and ease of use are expected to be central to its proposition. Pricing and equipment will determine how clearly it can distinguish itself from Tata Motors’ other electric offerings.
Battery capacity, driving range, charging performance and powertrain specifications remain undisclosed.
For Tata Motors, Kuno would provide a more direct response to the Windsor while adding a family EV to an increasingly varied EV portfolio. The production volumes under consideration suggest it is being planned as a significant contributor to the company’s electric vehicle business.
