Excelfore Powers Tata Sierra with OTA Update and Remote Diagnostics Platform
The deployment brings standards-based software lifecycle management and remote diagnostics to the Tata Sierra, marking a production-scale step toward software-defined vehicles.
Excelfore has deployed an over-the-air (OTA) software update and remote diagnostics platform for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, with the new Tata Sierra serving as the first vehicle to carry the technology at production scale. The platform is built on Excelfore's eSync OTA solution and runs on Amazon Web Services IoT Core.
The Tata Sierra has been engineered as a software-defined vehicle (SDV) from the ground up, integrating OTA updates and service-oriented diagnostics as core architectural features rather than optional additions. This allows the vehicle's software to be updated and improved throughout its operational life without requiring a physical service visit.
Shrinath Acharya, CEO of Excelfore, noted that the Sierra demonstrates how vehicles with internal combustion engines can also be brought into the software-defined category through intelligent OTA orchestration, and need not be limited to electric platforms.
The platform supports secure firmware and software updates, differential delivery, rollback and recovery, and coordinated management of multiple electronic control units simultaneously. Bidirectional cloud-to-vehicle communication enables continuous monitoring, with updates transmitted over automotive Ethernet networks and via gateway ECUs across CAN buses.
A central aspect of the deployment is its reliance on open industry standards. The OTA infrastructure follows eSync Alliance specifications, while remote diagnostics are delivered through ASAM's Service-Oriented Vehicle Diagnostics standard. Tata Motors' adoption of this approach is intended to ensure interoperability across suppliers and avoid dependence on proprietary systems.
Excelfore, founded in Silicon Valley, currently has its technology deployed across more than 19 million vehicles globally. The company operates across Europe, the United States, China, Japan, and India, and works with major cloud providers including AWS, Azure, and Google.
