Banking on the potential strong increase in the demand for anti-lock braking systems (ABS) following a government proposal to mandate ABS for all two-wheelers, Aurangabad-based vehicle safety components supplier Endurance Technologies is set to significantly boost its capacity for ABS during the financial year.
The company currently has an ABS capacity of 53,000 units per month at its plant in Aurangabad. As per the plans, Endurance Technologies will boost the ABS capacity at the existing plant by 200,000 units per month. The additional capacity is expected to come up during the fourth quarter of FY26 with an investment of Rs 103.1 crore.
An ABS is a safety feature that keeps the vehicle’s wheels from locking up during hard braking. It helps to maintain control, especially on wet or bumpy roads. While ABS is already mandatory for two-wheelers above 125cc, lower-capacity models are currently equipped with a Combined Braking System (CBS).
A draft notification published by the government last month said that “vehicles of category L2 [two-wheelers] manufactured on and after January 1, 2026, in case of all models, shall be fitted with Anti-lock Braking System conforming to the IS14664:2010.”
“This development is expected to significantly expand the market size for vehicles with ABS. The company is among the few manufacturers of ABS in India, and with the anticipated increase in demand, it aims not only to cater to the expanding market but also to enhance its market share in this segment,” Endurance Technologies said.
As the company prepares for an increase in ABS adoption, it is also expecting a rise in demand for compatible disc brake systems and brake discs. To support this market shift, it plans to expand its production capacity for both brake discs and disc brake systems as well this year.
Endurance Technologies will increase the capacity for both disc brake systems and brake discs at its Aurangabad plant by 100,000 units each from the current disc brake system capacity of 532,260 units and brake disc capacity of 619,500 units, with an investment of Rs 32.5 crore.
The company noted that the current utilization of its ABS is at around 31%, while that of disc brake systems and brake discs is at 84% and 98%, respectively.
Apart from Endurance Technologies, Bosch, Continental, Brakes India and UNO MINDA are the major ABS makers in India.
With the government reviewing the current Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, the industry is expecting a cut in the tax rate of vehicles, particularly lower-capacity two-wheelers, along with entry-level cars. Lower tax for two-wheelers could also result in higher demand for entry-level two-wheelers, a segment that has been hit with a significant increase in the cost of vehicles over the last couple of years.
Alongside the ABS regulation, the draft also mandates two BIS-certified helmets with every new two-wheeler purchase to improve the safety of the rider and passenger. Currently, only one helmet is required.
While mandating ABS and two helmets will add to the safety of lower-capacity budget scooters and motorcycles, these are expected to result in a considerable increase in the cost of two-wheelers. This comes at a time when entry-level two-wheelers are struggling to post a comeback.
With the potential of ABS becoming mandatory for lower capacity models, vehicle prices are estimated to increase by 3-6% with the cost of an ABS unit pegged at Rs 3,000-6,000 per unit.
