Electric Vehicle Retail Rises Sharply In September 2026: FADA

FADA Research data shows electric vehicle retail increased across two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles in September, while electric commercial vehicle volumes declined month on month.

Electric Vehicle Retail Rises Sharply In September 2026: FADA

Electric vehicle retail in India recorded broad-based growth in September 2026, with electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and passenger vehicles posting higher volumes than a year earlier, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The data was collated on October 3, 2026, from 1,468 of 1,469 RTOs.

Across the four EV categories covered by FADA, retail stood at 333,634 units in September 2026. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 207,314 units, electric three-wheelers 86,024 units, electric passenger vehicles 36,108 units and electric commercial vehicles 4,188 units.

Electric two-wheeler retail rose 13.16 percent month on month and 88.67 percent year on year. Electric three-wheelers increased 7.74 percent month on month and 40.03 percent year on year, while electric passenger vehicle retail rose 17.63 percent month on month and 94.56 percent year on year. Electric commercial vehicle retail declined 10.93 percent month on month but increased 158.2 percent year on year.

Electric Two-Wheeler Retail Reaches 207,314 Units

Electric two-wheelers recorded the largest retail volume among the EV categories in September, with 207,314 units, compared with 183,204 units in August and 109,882 units in September 2025.

FADA's data shows electric two-wheeler penetration increased to 11.6 percent in September from 10.7 percent in August and 8.2 percent a year earlier.

TVS Motor Company led electric two-wheeler retail with 54,037 units, up 10.42 percent month on month and 125.87 percent year on year. Bajaj Auto followed with 48,429 units, while Ather Energy recorded 30,533 units.

Hero MotoCorp retailed 24,321 electric two-wheelers, followed by Ola Electric with 13,451 units and Greaves Electric Mobility with 9,316 units.

Among the other manufacturers listed by FADA, River Mobility recorded 5,556 units, Bgauss Auto 5,023 units, Bounce Electric 3,069 units and E-Sprinto Green Energy 1,997 units.

Ola Electric was the only one among the major listed manufacturers to record a year-on-year decline, with retail down 2.96 percent. Bounce Electric recorded a 242.91 percent year-on-year increase, while E-Sprinto's retail rose 108.67 percent.

Electric Three-Wheeler Retail Grows 40% Year On Year

Electric three-wheeler retail stood at 86,024 units in September 2026, up from 79,846 units in August and 61,434 units in September 2025.

The category's electric penetration was 64.9 percent in September, marginally lower than 65.3 percent in August but higher than 56.7 percent in September 2025.

Bajaj Auto was the largest individual manufacturer in the category with 15,109 units, followed by Mahindra Group with 14,716 units. TVS Motor Company recorded 4,630 units.

Mahindra Last Mile Mobility accounted for 14,699 units within the Mahindra Group total. Other manufacturers included YC Electric Vehicle with 2,355 units, Saera Electric Auto with 1,804 units and Dilli Electric Auto with 1,711 units.

Piaggio Vehicles recorded 1,528 units, while Mini Metro EV, J.S. Auto, Energy Electric Vehicles, Omega Seiki and Zeniak Innovation India recorded 1,437, 1,378, 1,025, 930 and 897 units, respectively.

The 'Others' category accounted for 38,504 units, up 5.86 percent month on month and 19.83 percent year on year.

Electric Passenger Vehicle Retail Nearly Doubles Year On Year

Electric passenger vehicle retail increased to 36,108 units in September 2026 from 30,696 units in August and 18,559 units in September 2025. This represented a 17.63 percent month-on-month increase and a 94.56 percent year-on-year rise.

FADA's electric passenger vehicle penetration chart shows EVs accounting for 8.5 percent of passenger vehicle retail in September, compared with 7.6 percent in August and 5.7 percent a year earlier.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles led the electric passenger vehicle segment with 14,791 units, up 12.41 percent from August and 100.72 percent from September 2025.

Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 7,780 units, while JSW MG Motor India recorded 5,242 units. VinFast Auto India retailed 2,964 electric passenger vehicles, compared with six units in September 2025.

Kia India recorded 1,262 units, nearly doubling its August retail, while Maruti Suzuki India recorded 1,104 units, down 21.81 percent month on month. BYD India registered 836 units and Hyundai Motor India 792 units.

Among the luxury and premium manufacturers, BMW India recorded 502 units, Tesla India 291 units, Toyota Kirloskar Motor 218 units and Mercedes-Benz 125 units.

Electric Commercial Vehicle Retail Falls 11% Month On Month

Electric commercial vehicle retail stood at 4,188 units in September 2026, down from 4,702 units in August but up from 1,622 units in September 2025. The category therefore recorded a 10.93 percent month-on-month decline while growing 158.2 percent year on year.

FADA's data puts electric commercial vehicle penetration at 4.04 percent in September, compared with 5.18 percent in August and 2.16 percent in September 2025.

Tata Motors led the category with 1,275 units, although its retail declined 9.96 percent month on month. Euler Motors recorded 1,064 units, up 25.32 percent from August and 1,644.26 percent year on year.

Mahindra Group recorded 464 units, while JBM Auto retailed 271 units. Switch Mobility recorded 261 units, down 6.79 percent month on month but up 63.13 percent year on year.

VE Commercial Vehicles recorded 149 units, while Tivolt Electric Vehicles and PMI Electro Mobility Solutions recorded 142 and 141 units, respectively.

Oletra Greentech's retail declined 59.05 percent month on month and 12.84 percent year on year to 129 units. Sany Heavy Industry India recorded 38 units in September compared with 605 units in August and two units a year earlier.

FADA noted that Tamil Nadu data was not available for the commercial vehicle and three-wheeler categories in the September dataset.
