Electric Passenger Vehicle Registrations Rise 50% to 30,325 units in August 

Electric passenger vehicle registrations in India rose 50% year on year to 30,325 units in August 2026, according to Vahan data compiled by Nuvama. Registrations fell 12% from 34,561 units in July.

Registrations in the first five months of FY2026-27 increased 85% to 153,403 units, from 83,007 units in the corresponding period last year.

EV Penetration Holds at 7.4% of PV Sales in August

“EV acceptance is improving due to higher aspirational value and the availability of more model options,” said Raghunandhan N L, Executive Director at Nuvama Institutional Equities.

Electric vehicles accounted for 7.4% of passenger vehicle registrations in August, against 7.8% in July.

Tata Motors Leads EV Sales; Mahindra, JSW MG and VinFast Follow

Tata Motors retained the top position with 12,983 registrations, up 61% year on year. Its market share stood at 42.8%, compared with 39.9% in August 2025.

Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 6,367 registrations, up 68%, and a 21% share. JSW MG Motor India registered 4,568 units, down 19%, and held a 15.1% share.

VinFast ranked fourth with 2,196 registrations and a 7.2% share. Maruti Suzuki was fifth with 1,391 units and a 4.6% share.

Against the broader sequential decline, VinFast and Hyundai Motor India increased registrations by 44% and 34%, respectively.
