Electric Car Registrations Hit Record 35,948 in September; EV Share Rises to 8.3%

Registrations jump 94% year on year, taking first-half FY27 volumes to nearly 2 lakh units.

India’s electric passenger vehicle registrations rose 94% year-on-year to a record 35,948 units in September 2026, with EVs accounting for 8.3% of the passenger vehicle market, according to Vahan data compiled by Nuvama.

Registrations increased 11% from August’s 32,433 units, while EV penetration rose from 7.6% a month earlier. Roughly one in every 12 passenger vehicles registered in September was electric.

April–September registrations reached 1,91,751 units, an increase of 89% from 1,01,546 units a year earlier. The July–September quarter contributed 1,03,138 units, up 82% year-on-year.

“EV acceptance is improving due to higher aspirational value and availability of more model options,” Raghunandhan NL of Nuvama wrote in the brokerage’s research note on September registrations.

Tata Leads, Mahindra Gains Share

Tata Motors retained the top position with 14,722 registrations in September, double its year-earlier volume and 7% higher than August. Its market share stood at 41%, compared with 42.6% in August and 39.7% in September last year.

Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 7,741 registrations, up 116% year on year and 14% over August. Its share increased to 21.5% from 21% in the previous month.

Together, Tata and Mahindra accounted for nearly 63% of electric passenger vehicle registrations in September.

JSW MG Motor India ranked third with 5,226 registrations, up 9% year on year and 6% month on month. Its share declined to 14.5% from 15.2% in August and 25.9% a year earlier, as its growth trailed the overall market.

VinFast and Kia Gain Ground

VinFast registered 2,961 vehicles in September, up 32% over August, retaining fourth place. Its share increased to 8.2% from 6.9%, a gain of 133 basis points. The company had registered just six vehicles in September last year.

Kia moved into fifth place with 1,256 registrations, up 110% year on year and 48% over August. Its share rose to 3.5% from 2.6% in the previous month.

The top five manufacturers together accounted for nearly 89% of September registrations.

Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,095 registrations, down 26% from August, reducing its share to 3% from 4.5%. Hyundai’s registrations declined 6% month-on-month to 789 units, although they were 95% higher than a year earlier.

BYD registered 831 vehicles, up 47% over August. BMW’s registrations increased 73% month-on-month to 501 units, while Tesla’s volumes rose 111% to 279 units.

First-Half Volumes Nearly Double

Tata registered 76,580 electric passenger vehicles in April–September, up 102% year on year. Its share increased to 39.9% from 37.4%.

Mahindra’s registrations grew 120% to 43,677 units, lifting its share to 22.8% from 19.5%. Together, the two manufacturers accounted for nearly 63% of first-half volumes, compared with about 57% a year earlier.

JSW MG Motor’s registrations increased 12% to 33,279 units, but its share fell to 17.4% from 29.4%.

VinFast recorded 10,824 registrations in the first half, giving it a 5.6% share. Maruti Suzuki registered 9,274 vehicles, while Kia’s volumes rose 219% to 4,134 units.

At the first-half pace, electric passenger vehicle registrations would exceed 3.8 lakh units in FY27.
