Energy In Motion (EIM) has inaugurated its second heavy-duty battery swapping-cum-charging station at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal (NSDT) under the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). The facility forms part of plans for an EV Megaplex at JNPT as the port works towards its target of full energy transition by December 2027.
The new station follows EIM's existing E5 battery swapping facility at JNPA. The company said nearly 150 of its electric trucks are currently operating within JNPA, while the first swapping station has reached its stated operational capacity.
The planned EV Megaplex is intended to support the expansion of electric freight operations across the port. According to EIM, the infrastructure will eventually support more than 700 heavy trucks operating across key terminal corridors at JNPT.
EV Megaplex at JNPT to include swapping and service facilities
The EV Megaplex is planned to comprise three battery swap-cum-charging stations, a dedicated service station, a driver training centre and a heavy-vehicle simulator. The existing swapping facility will form part of the wider infrastructure.
The setup is intended to combine battery swapping with vehicle servicing and driver training. EIM said the swapping infrastructure is aimed at reducing turnaround time, while the service facilities are intended to support vehicle uptime and the training and simulation facilities to prepare drivers for electric heavy-vehicle operations.
EIM expands electric freight operations beyond port movements
EIM Managing Director Narendra Murkumbi said the company's electric freight operations at JNPT are being extended beyond dedicated port movements to include container freight station (CFS) movements. He said the expansion involves coordination between EIM, JNPA, terminal operators and logistics service providers.
The company is also using slot-booking and slot-optimisation systems as part of integrating electric vehicles into high-throughput freight operations. EIM said the EV Megaplex is intended to bring together energy infrastructure, electric vehicles and freight operations as JNPA works towards its December 2027 energy-transition target.
