Eicher Trucks and Buses delivered six electric tarmac buses to IndiGo at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on September 12, 2025, marking the company's entry into aviation ground support equipment.
The Eicher Skyline Pro-E 12m electric buses will transport passengers between the terminal and aircraft parked at stands. The delivery represents the first phase of a partnership between VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), Eicher's parent company, and India's domestic airline leader.
The buses feature a capacity of 17 seats plus driver position with standing room for 52 passengers. Each vehicle uses lithium-iron phosphate battery technology and CCS2 fast charging systems designed for airport ground operations. The buses include full air suspension, power-assisted steering, and disc brakes on front and rear axles.
"We are honored to partner with IndiGo in their journey towards greener and sustainable ground operations at Kempegowda Airport," said Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President Bus Division at VECV. The company noted that Kempegowda Airport serves 42 million passengers annually.
This deployment supports IndiGo's environmental initiatives as the airline works to reduce operational emissions. The partnership extends beyond equipment supply to include infrastructure development for electric vehicle charging systems.
IndiGo operates over 400 aircraft and runs approximately 2,200 daily flights connecting 90 domestic and 40 international destinations. The airline transported over 118 million customers in fiscal year 2025 and received recognition as "Best Airline in India and South Asia" by Skytrax in 2025.
VECV is a joint venture between Volvo Group and Eicher Motors Limited, manufacturing Eicher-branded commercial vehicles and distributing Volvo Trucks in India. The company has focused on expanding electric vehicle offerings and charging infrastructure through partnerships with institutional customers.
The electric bus deployment aligns with broader adoption of clean energy solutions in India's aviation sector, as airports and airlines implement sustainability measures to reduce carbon emissions from ground operations.
