The Delhi government has extended its Electric Vehicle Policy until March 31, 2026, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced on Tuesday, according to PTI. The extension will remain in effect until a new policy receives approval, whichever occurs first.
Key proposals in the upcoming draft include phasing out CNG auto-rickshaws by August 2025, banning registration of petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers after August 15, 2026, and retaining subsidies for electric vehicles priced below ₹25 lakh.
Singh confirmed that the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved the policy extension. The minister cited the need for comprehensive public consultation on the draft as the primary reason for the extension, noting that this process requires substantial time to complete.
The extension aims to facilitate consultations with multiple stakeholders, including citizens, industry experts, private organizations, and environmental groups. During this period, the government plans to strengthen the EV charging network, review current subsidies and waivers, and develop systems for safe disposal of electronic waste and batteries.
The current policy was originally introduced in 2020 under the previous Aam Aadmi Party administration and initially aimed for 25% EV adoption in new registrations by 2024. The policy was set to expire in August 2023 but has received several short-term extensions while a revised framework is being drafted.
The Transport Department is reviewing existing data on EV registrations, subsidy disbursements, and infrastructure coverage. This review will inform potential updates to incentive schemes, charging station density, and battery disposal mechanisms to support wider EV adoption across the National Capital Region.
