Delhi extends ban on BS3, BS4 petrol, diesel cars: TOI

The Delhi govt has announced that it will continue banning BS3 and BS4 petrol and diesel cars from plying on the city roads despite a relaxed GRAP regime, Tol reported on November 24.

In case any BS3 or BS4 vehicles are found plying on the roads of Delhi, a fine of Rs 20,000 can be slapped, Delhi govt's rule says.

Delhi's Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, highlighted the ongoing improvement in air quality but emphasised the need for continued public awareness to sustain these positive changes, the publication reported.

Pointing out that the ban on truck entry into the city has been lifted, Rai cited scientists' statements to say that low wind speed could lead to further improvement in the pollution situation, TOI noted.

The government has decided to extend GRAP 3 in Delhi until air quality shows a  more significant improvement. Apart from construction work deemed of national importance, other construction activities are currently prohibited, with exceptions for linear projects.

Construction work remains prohibited, while restrictions on buses and trucks have been eased. Presently, BS3 and BS4 vehicles are not allowed to enter or travel within Delhi from other cities.

Gopal Rai urged the residents of Delhi and North India to remain vigilant, emphasising the need for caution despite improvements in pollution levels.

He cited a rise in the Air Quality Index (AQI) numbers after Diwali, blaming it on post-celebration negligence.

Delhi is currently subject to Grap-1, Grap-2, and Grap-3 restrictions. While there is a possibility of lifting the ban on BS-3 and BS-4 vehicles in the future, no specific date has been provided for such an action at this point, TOI noted.
