Cummins Group in India, a trailblazing power solutions technology provider, is poised to make a significant impact at the Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) 2024 in Pune. In alignment with its Destination Zero decarbonisation strategy, Cummins is set to unveil an industry-first, next-generation fuel-agnostic platform and showcase its innovative Single Module Aftertreatment system.
The Destination Zero strategy reflects Cummins' commitment to go further and faster in minimizing the greenhouse gas (GHG) and air quality impacts of its products. It adopts a dual-path approach—actively reducing emissions from internal combustion engines while simultaneously investing in the development of new, zero-emissions products, aligning with the evolving needs of the energy transition.
Anjali Pandey, Chief Operating Officer, Cummins Group in India, emphasised the crucial role the company plays in addressing global climate challenges. She highlighted the ongoing investments and innovations aimed at developing technologies that not only ensure the success of customers today but also contribute to a more sustainable tomorrow.
Fuel-Agnostic Platform: Cummins will present its innovative fuel-agnostic platform at SIAT 2024, showcasing an effective solution to reduce emissions across various fuels. The platform's fuel-agnostic architecture utilises a common base engine, incorporating cutting-edge technologies such as a Direct Injection Fuel System, two-stage turbocharging, overhead cam, closed crankcase ventilation, and pent-roof cylinder head design. The platform is cyber-secure and functionally safe, compliant with control modules tuned for specific fuels like diesel, natural gas, renewable natural gas, and hydrogen. This approach ensures diesel-like performance across fuels, providing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) the flexibility to offer multiple fuel types with minimal modifications.
At the event, Cummins will demonstrate the fuel-agnostic platform concept through:
Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine: Showcasing the power of hydrogen as a clean fuel source, this internal combustion engine operates with lower emissions and, when combined with green hydrogen, produces zero CO2 emissions from well-to-wheel. The solutions cater specifically to medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses, supporting decarbonisation across a diverse range of duty cycles.
Natural Gas Engine: Cummins will exhibit the reliability and effectiveness of natural gas engines in reducing emissions while maintaining robust performance. With natural gas gaining traction as an alternative power technology, these engines align with India's vision of increasing the share of natural gas in the energy mix.
Latest Generation Diesel: Cummins will showcase its latest-generation advanced diesel platform, featuring nearly 700,000 Euro VI, low-emission engines. These advanced diesel engines optimise fuel efficiency, enabling customers to achieve lower GHG emissions while enhancing power and torque.
Single Module Aftertreatment System: Cummins will also highlight its ultra-high efficiency aftertreatment system, the 9-inch (0.229 meters) Single Module. This innovative system is remarkably compact, being up to 70% smaller and 40% lighter compared to systems with similar architectures. It boasts improved NOx conversion efficiency, removing over 99% of all particulate matter (PM) by weight and count.
Manufactured in India, with over 70% localised components, this product stands out for its adaptability to various applications, with catalyst diameters ranging from 5.66 inches (0.144 meters) to 13 inches (0.330 meters).
