Cummins in India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have launched an advanced Decision Support System (DSS) for air quality management in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, expanding the scope of the Cleaner Air Better Life (CABL) initiative. Developed in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and Airvoice, the platform is designed to support local authorities with predictive data for air quality management.
The DSS provides up to 72-hour air quality forecasts and analytical tools intended to help civic authorities identify pollution hotspots, monitor emerging air quality events and plan interventions before pollution levels worsen. The system is expected to support data-driven decision-making for urban air quality management in the two cities.
The initiative forms part of the Cleaner Air Better Life (CABL) programme, conceptualised by Cummins in India, CII and NITI Aayog. The programme has evolved into a multi-stakeholder platform bringing together government agencies, industry, academia and civil society to address air pollution through four focus areas: clean transport, clean fuels, clean industry and biomass management.
According to Cummins, the CABL programme has expanded beyond policy discussions to on-ground implementation projects. The company said the initiative has reached more than one lakh farmers across rural India, helped avoid the burning of 6.4 lakh tonnes of crop residue, conserved 71 billion litres of water and reduced an estimated 1.3 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. It also stated that the programme has covered 432 villages and more than 4.8 lakh acres.
Speaking on the launch, Shveta Arya, Managing Director, Cummins India Ltd. and Chairperson, CII Cleaner Air Better Life, said, "Every city has a unique air quality challenge and therefore requires a unique solution. By expanding this collaborative model from Delhi to cities like Pune, we are creating a blueprint for cleaner, more resilient urban environments."
The DSS was unveiled during the Clean Air Forum in Pune, attended by representatives from the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, district administration, industry, academia, research institutions and civil society organisations. According to the organisers, the forum aims to strengthen collaboration between public and private stakeholders in implementing air quality improvement measures.
