CIL and AM Green Sign MoU for Renewable Energy Supply to Green Ammonia Projects
Coal India Limited and AM Green formalize a partnership to develop up to 4,500 MW of renewable energy capacity, supporting India's energy transition and AM Green’s green ammonia production goals by 2030.
Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop one of India’s largest renewable energy supply projects. Under this agreement, CIL will supply up to 4,500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to power AM Green’s upcoming green ammonia facilities.
The energy will be sourced through a combination of solar and wind power projects, which will be implemented in phases. CIL plans to establish solar power capacities of 2,500 MW to 3,000 MW and wind power capacities between 1,500 MW and 2,000 MW. The estimated investment for the total capacity is around ₹25,000 crore.
Potential wind project sites are being considered in southern Indian states, while solar installations are expected in high-irradiance regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan. To ensure consistent power supply, AM Green will integrate the renewable energy with pumped hydro storage at its facilities.
CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad stated that although coal remains a key component of India’s energy mix for now, the company is looking to expand its role in sustainable energy development. He added that this initiative aligns with CIL’s strategy to evolve into an integrated energy provider.
AM Green, founded by the promoters of Greenko Group, is targeting the production of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This would require around 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, accounting for a significant share of India’s green hydrogen production targets under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, described the agreement as a step toward scaling affordable and clean energy solutions for industrial applications. He noted the strategic importance of securing renewable energy supply for green ammonia and hydrogen production at scale.
The MoU was signed by Sudarsan Bora, GM (E&M) from CIL, and Shatanshu Agrawal, Senior Vice President – Business Development at AM Green. Also present were CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad, Director (Marketing) Mukesh Choudhary, and GM (MM & Solar) Anil Kumar.
AM Green is a new energy platform established by the founders of Greenko Group, focusing on the production of green ammonia, green hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel, green chemicals, and biofuels. The company aims to develop renewable energy-based fuel production facilities across India and targets a green ammonia production capacity of 5 MTPA by 2030. This output is expected to support both India’s net-zero ambitions and contribute to decarbonization efforts in international markets.
