Bridgestone has developed custom Potenza Race semi-slick tires specifically for Volkswagen's Golf GTI EDITION 50, the manufacturer's 50th anniversary model that recently established the fastest Nürburgring lap time for any Volkswagen production vehicle.
The tire manufacturer announced the partnership on June 30, 2025, following the Golf GTI EDITION 50's record-setting performance at Germany's Nürburgring circuit. The vehicle completed a lap of the 20.82-kilometer Nordschleife track in 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds earlier this year while equipped exclusively with the custom Bridgestone tires.
Volkswagen unveiled the Golf GTI EDITION 50 at the 24-hour race held at the Nürburgring, marking five decades since the Golf GTI line was first introduced. The anniversary model represents the most powerful production GTI to date.
The custom tires feature a high-grip compound designed for dry performance conditions, along with a tread pattern engineered to maintain performance in wet conditions. Bridgestone developed the tires with an optimized cavity profile and a lightweight carcass structure intended to reduce rolling resistance.
"Our bespoke Potenza Race tyres were engineered to extract every ounce of performance from the Golf GTI EDITION 50," said Radoslaw Bolkowski, Vice President of Original Equipment Sales at Bridgestone EMEA. "Seeing them help deliver a record-breaking Nürburgring lap is a brilliant moment for our team."
The partnership makes Bridgestone the exclusive tire supplier for the optional GTI-performance package available with the Golf GTI EDITION 50. The vehicle uses 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza Race tires sized 235/35 R19 91Y, which feature Volkswagen sidewall markings to indicate their exclusive development for this model.
Bridgestone developed and produced the tires in Europe as part of its Potenza racing tire family. The company positions itself as a global leader in premium tires and sustainable mobility solutions, operating across 35 countries in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
The Golf GTI EDITION 50 will be classified under "pre-production models" in the official Nürburgring records until the vehicle becomes available for customer orders. The record-setting lap demonstrates the collaboration between the two companies in developing performance-focused automotive components.
