Brembo, Ningbo SAFE Form Joint Venture To Manufacture Motorcycle ABS Systems In India
New venture, BRSF Active Safety Solutions, will assemble and supply single- and dual-channel ABS systems from a Chakan facility targeting India's motorcycle market.
Brembo and China's Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems have signed a joint venture agreement to establish a new company, BRSF Active Safety Solutions, focused on the production of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) for motorcycles in India. The venture aims to address growing demand for advanced braking technologies in the country's two-wheeler market, which accounts for up to 25 million registered vehicles annually.
Under the agreement, Brembo will hold a 60 per cent stake in the new entity, which will locally assemble and supply ABS systems for motorcycle manufacturers operating in India. Production will take place at a dedicated facility in Chakan, Pune, adjacent to Brembo India's existing plant. The facility is expected to employ around 50 people, with staffing and localisation levels increasing in line with production volumes.
The joint venture will initially offer both single-channel and dual-channel ABS solutions for the Indian market, with the potential to introduce more advanced braking technologies in the future as market requirements evolve. The companies said the manufacturing setup has been designed to respond to changing safety regulations and customer requirements.
"The joint venture with Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems reflects our commitment to supporting the progressive evolution of motorcycle safety standards in India," said Andrea Paganessi, Motorcycle GBU Chief Operating Officer of Brembo. He added that the company aims to support the market's transition towards advanced braking technologies through local production and industrial investments.
Hill Shan, Founder of Ningbo SAFE Brakes Systems, said the venture would focus on building a local manufacturing platform tailored to the requirements of the Indian motorcycle industry. "Together with Brembo, we are establishing a manufacturing platform focused on quality, reliability and the specific requirements of the Indian motorcycle market," he said.
Brembo said the partnership combines its braking system expertise with Ningbo SAFE's experience in motorcycle ABS technology. The companies expect the collaboration to complement their existing motorcycle braking business under the BYBRE brand while expanding their active safety solutions portfolio for original equipment manufacturers.
The transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals.
