BorgWarner has been awarded a contract by a major East Asian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to supply turbochargers for a 1.6-liter engine used in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) SUV models. The agreement, which focuses on the Korean market, marks a continuation of the companies’ long-standing collaboration, now spanning 18 years.

The turbocharger program features BorgWarner’s wastegate turbocharger technology, designed to support the performance and efficiency demands of hybrid powertrains. The system includes a durable actuator and an optimized wastegate valve design, enabling precise boost pressure control under varying engine loads and driving conditions. These features are intended to enhance transient response, acceleration smoothness, and overall drivability.

Engineered for high thermal and mechanical durability, the turbocharger is built to withstand the elevated exhaust gas temperatures associated with hybrid vehicle operation. Design improvements at the component level aim to reduce friction and thermal losses, contributing to better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Production is set to begin in 2027 at BorgWarner’s manufacturing facility in Pyongtaek, South Korea. Localized production is expected to support supply chain efficiency and regional service capabilities.

Dr. Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of Turbos and Thermal Technologies, stated that the technology aligns with the OEM’s hybrid vehicle development goals. He noted the company’s ongoing commitment to providing reliable and efficient boosting solutions for advanced powertrain applications.

BorgWarner, with over 130 years of experience in automotive innovation, continues to focus on technologies that support sustainable mobility solutions worldwide.
