BorgWarner Secures eHeater Contracts With Two Global OEMs for Hybrid Platforms

BorgWarner has secured contracts with two major global original equipment manufacturers to supply high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH) technology for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle platforms, with production scheduled to begin in 2028.

The contracts include a 400V technology deployment across one OEM's PHEV platforms and an 800V HVCH system for another global OEM's light PHEV platforms, including a pick-up truck. One contract marks BorgWarner's first eHeater win for a hybrid program with the respective legacy automaker.

The HVCH technology enhances vehicle cabin and battery heating, improving overall driving experience and system performance. The system includes a resistive heating element and smart controller for efficient heat transmission to coolant, enabling heating in cold conditions.

BorgWarner's HVCH features a compact, modular design that minimizes size and weight. The technology delivers low thermal mass, high power density and efficiency for faster heating and cooling. It optimizes battery temperature and supports fast charging by maintaining ideal thermal conditions.

The heating elements are designed for durability, lasting over 15,000 hours with anti-vibration properties and non-flammable characteristics. The system includes functional safety concepts with automatic shutdown capabilities if issues are detected.
