BorgWarner has announced a new supply agreement with a leading Chinese original equipment manufacturer for its 7-in-1 Integrated Drive Module (iDM). The technology will be deployed in the automaker's hybrid SUV platform, marking another significant partnership in the rapidly expanding Chinese new energy vehicle market.
The iDM represents a comprehensive integration approach, consolidating seven key functions into a single compact unit. The system incorporates two electric motors with high-voltage hairpin winding technology, a dual inverter with integrated onboard charger, DC-DC converter, battery voltage boost capability, vehicle control unit, power distribution unit functions, and an electric gear transmission.
According to Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, the company's expertise in components and systems enables the development of highly efficient, customised drivetrain architectures for hybrid applications. The module has been specifically engineered for the customer's requirements.
The technical specifications indicate the system can handle power requirements up to 160 kilowatts with a peak operating voltage of 450 volts. It delivers peak drive torque exceeding 3,400 Newton-meters and achieves a maximum speed of 1,350 revolutions per minute.
BorgWarner's integrated approach offers several advantages for vehicle manufacturers, including cost savings through consolidated components, improved overall system efficiency, and design flexibility due to the scalable nature of each module element. The company's in-house capabilities span electric motors, power electronics, and gearbox technology.
Mass production of the iDM for the Chinese OEM is scheduled to begin in 2026. The partnership reflects BorgWarner's continued commitment to the Chinese automotive market and its transition toward electrified powertrains.
