BorgWarner is expanding its partnership with a major North American OEM, securing contracts to supply two types of two-speed transfer cases – Electro-Mechanical On-Demand (EMOD) and Electric Shift-on-the-Fly (ESOF) – for upcoming vehicle platforms.
These transfer cases will feature in the OEM’s combustion and hybrid passenger truck platforms, with production for two platforms starting in 2027 and a third expected in 2028.
BorgWarner, a global leader in mobility solutions, has been supplying transfer cases to this OEM for over 40 years, supporting their passenger truck range with reliable, high-performance components. Isabelle McKenzie, BorgWarner Vice President and President of Drivetrain and Morse Systems, said such contracts strengthen the company’s reputation for quality and reliability in transfer case technology.
The EMOD transfer case, a high-performance unit, is designed to enhance vehicle stability and safety by offering quick torque response, accurate torque distribution, and proactive torque management, achieved through its motor-driven clutch-apply system, which actively modulates torque distribution between the front and rear wheels based on various vehicle parameters. Although the EMOD transfer case is present in other OEM platforms, this marks its first application in this specific passenger truck platform.
BorgWarner’s ESOF transfer case, tailored for heavy-duty trucks, delivers a part-time four-wheel drive system with an efficient two-wheel drive mode, also enabling seamless transition to four-wheel drive while the vehicle is in motion. This system, now on its third vehicle evolution for the OEM’s truck platform, features advanced noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) engineering for optimal performance.
Both transfer cases use BorgWarner’s HY-VO® driveline chain, optimised for efficiency and durability. The EMOD model is also enhanced with BorgWarner’s premium friction products.
Production of the transfer cases will take place at BorgWarner’s facility in Seneca, South Carolina. With these extended contracts, BorgWarner reinforces its role as a key supplier in the North American OEM’s drivetrain solutions for passenger trucks, continuing its legacy of innovation and customer support in the automotive sector.
