BorgWarner has secured an expanded contract to supply its battery management system (BMS) to a global automaker, extending a partnership that began in 2023. The expansion will support additional vehicle lines across multiple segments beginning in 2029.
The battery management system will be integrated into B-segment and C-segment passenger cars, along with light commercial vehicles for both battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) applications. The system has been in series production since 2023, providing real-world validation of its design and performance.
Dr. Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, noted the expansion reflects customer confidence in the production-proven design. The company is upgrading compatibility to support the automaker's growing electrified vehicle lineup while maintaining safety, durability and performance standards.
The BMS features a modular architecture with a central battery monitoring unit connected to cell monitoring units positioned at battery modules. The system monitors charge levels, battery health, temperatures and cell voltages, while performing passive cell balancing to optimize performance and support long-term durability.
Key technical capabilities include support for fast direct current charging communication and built-in controls and diagnostics designed to meet Automotive Safety Integrity Level D (ASIL D) functional safety standards. The scalable design accommodates various battery pack configurations and supports applications operating up to 800 volts.
The compact module-level units allow for flexible packaging options, and the electronics platform can be upgraded to support future functions. BorgWarner states that the expanded program leverages a design validated through series production, enabling customers to scale their electrified vehicle portfolios while utilizing established functionality and a proven supply chain.
The Michigan-based company has more than 130 years of experience in automotive components and has positioned itself as a supplier of electrification technologies as the industry transitions toward electric mobility.
