Blue Energy Motors (BEM) has launched an electric heavy-duty truck equipped with battery swapping technology at its Chakan facility in Pune. The launch was presided over by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also inaugurated the Mumbai-Pune electric corridor, marking the country's first electrified highway route.
The Mumbai-Pune corridor represents the initial phase of an ambitious plan to electrify major national highway corridors over the next three years, aimed at supporting India's Net Zero goals and creating a more sustainable freight ecosystem.
BEM has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to establish a new manufacturing facility capable of producing 30,000 trucks annually, backed by an investment of ₹3,500 crore. The company has already secured MoUs for over 10,000 electric trucks, indicating strong market demand for electric freight solutions.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted Maharashtra's role in sustainable innovation, stating that the project aligns with the nation's vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat and environmental sustainability.
Anirudh Bhuwalka, Founder and Managing Director of Blue Energy Motors, described the launch as the beginning of an electric vehicle revolution in India's heavy-duty truck segment. The company's electric trucks feature unlimited range through battery swapping, high payload capacity, and advanced mobility intelligence for fleet reliability.
The new truck is built specifically for Indian conditions and follows BEM's earlier success with LNG-powered vehicles. Key features include an Energy-as-a-Service model designed to reduce upfront capital costs, minimize charging downtime, and deliver the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry with the highest payload capacity in its category.
Anshuman Ruia, Director at Essar, a strategic partner in the venture, called the launch a milestone in India's decarbonization journey, reinforcing the commitment to green mobility through cleaner energy and sustainable infrastructure.
