Bharat Taxi Launches in Delhi Today with 2.5 Lakh Vehicles, Reports NDTV
India's first cooperative ride-hailing platform promises zero commission for drivers and fares up to 30% cheaper than Ola and Uber.
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is set to formally launch Bharat Taxi today, February 5, 2026, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, according to NDTV. The cooperative-based ride-hailing platform aims to challenge established players like Ola, Uber, and Rapido with a driver-ownership model that eliminates per-ride commissions.
NDTV reports that the platform operates on a unique cooperative structure where drivers, referred to as "Sarathis," own five shares each in the cooperative. Instead of paying commission on individual rides, drivers will pay a flat fee of Rs 30 per day to use the app. Around 2.5 lakh vehicles are expected to be registered initially in the Delhi-NCR region.
According to officials cited by NDTV, Bharat Taxi could offer fares up to 30% cheaper than existing services. The platform eliminates the Rs 30-50 commission typically charged per ride by private competitors, allowing passengers to benefit from lower costs.
The app includes built-in safety features and a dedicated helpline, NDTV notes. Additionally, 35 special booths have been established with the Delhi Police to quickly address passenger complaints. All drivers on the platform will have verified records.
NDTV reports that Bharat Taxi is operated by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Limited and backed by major cooperative institutions including IFFCO, Amul, NCDC, NABARD, NDDB, KRIBHCO, NAFED, and NCEL.
The platform had a soft launch in December 2025 in Delhi and Gujarat, according to the report. During the pilot phase, it recorded an average of 5,500 rides daily, including 4,000 airport trips, with over 1.4 lakh drivers already registered. The app is available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
According to NDTV, Bharat Taxi plans to expand to all states and cities across India within the next two years, establish dedicated support centers in every state, and develop a sustainable, cooperative-based mobility ecosystem integrated with national digital public infrastructure.
