Battery Smart, an electric vehicle battery-swapping network for electric two- and three-wheelers, today announced the completion of 50 million battery swaps on its network.

Battery Smart has expanded its operations to over 1,400 swapping stations across more than 35 cities in India since its inception. The company’s network currently supports approximately 60,000 drivers, offering a battery-as-a-service model that aims to address common barriers to EV adoption.

"Achieving 50 Million battery swaps is not just a milestone for us; it demonstrates our steadfast commitment to making EV adoption both accessible and affordable. The success of our battery-swapping model lies in its ability to address the key challenges faced by EV users,” Pulkit Khurana, co-founder and CEO of Battery Smart said.

The battery-swapping model allows riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in about two minutes, potentially reducing range anxiety and improving efficiency for EV operators. This approach also aims to reduce upfront costs for EV drivers by eliminating the need to own the battery.

Battery Smart's expansion strategy involves partnering with local businesses to leverage existing infrastructure, particularly in regions where charging facilities are limited, thereby enhancing EV accessibility in these areas.

This development coincides with the recent government initiative PM E-DRIVE scheme, aimed at boosting electric two- and three-wheeler adoption in India. The Ministry of Power has also recently released guidelines for battery swapping, which could further support the growth of the EV ecosystem in the country.

Battery swapping is an alternative to charging electric vehicles which involves exchanging discharged batteries for charged ones. Battery swapping is popularly used for vehicles such as two and three wheelers which have smaller batteries.
