Autocar India, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz India, has earned a Guinness World Records title for the Greatest Temperature Change Achieved by an Electric Production Car. The achievement highlights the performance and reliability of electric vehicles in India’s extreme weather conditions.
The record was set by the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4MATIC SUV, which undertook a journey from Ranao near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan—where temperatures reached 47.5°C—to the snow-covered heights of Khardung La in Ladakh, where it dipped to -3.7°C. This marked a total temperature change of 51.2°C, establishing a new benchmark for electric vehicles.
The EQS 450 4MATIC, equipped with a 122kWh battery delivering a real-world range of over 600km, handled the terrain with its all-wheel-drive system, 360hp power output, and 800Nm of torque. The vehicle also includes advanced features like the MBUX Hyperscreen, Burmester sound system, nine airbags, Level 2 ADAS, and a 360-degree camera, ensuring both safety and comfort throughout the journey.
Autocar India Editor Hormazd Sorabjee emphasized the record's significance in drawing attention to climate change while showcasing India's diverse geography. "Climate change is real – we’re feeling it, living it, and there is no greater emergency confronting our planet today...Switching to electric mobility is a clear step in combating climate change," he said.
Rahul Kakar, who drove the EQS SUV during the expedition, noted the unique weather-related challenges and the SUV's consistent performance.
Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said the achievement reinforces the suitability of Mercedes-Benz BEVs for Indian conditions. He also acknowledged customers and EV adopters for their role in driving the shift toward sustainable mobility.
This record is the second Guinness World Records title for the EQS range in India, further underlining its engineering and environmental credentials.
