Auto Tech Procurement Shifts Directly to OEMs as Tier-1 Suppliers Squeeze Spending

Over the past year and a half, the traditional automotive supply chain hierarchy has experienced a structural realignment in software procurement. Squeezed by inflation, electrification costs, and vehicle volume uncertainty, Tier-1 component suppliers have aggressively cut external engineering spend, forcing tech vendors to pivot their order books directly toward original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

According to executive commentary from engineering service provider Tata Elxsi, revenue from Tier-1 suppliers underwent severe erosion over a six-quarter period. "Over the last five, six quarters, we have leaked quite heavily on the supplier side of the automotive," said Nitin Pai, Chief Marketing and Chief Strategy Officer at Tata Elxsi, during the company’s Q2 FY27 earnings call. "They were the first and the most badly hit. And you have seen the swing of revenues from suppliers to automotive, OEMs."

Direct OEM Deals Stabilize Tech Order Books

As Tier-1 budgets contracted, direct engagement with vehicle manufacturers stepped in to offset revenue losses and establish a more stable financial foundation for software engineering firms. Vehicle makers, focused on software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures and cloud telematics, are increasingly bypassing traditional component vendors to retain direct control over their digital architecture and intellectual property.

This direct procurement strategy is already yielding results in key global markets.  Tata Elxsi Managing Director and CEO Manoj Raghavan highlighted that recent growth in the company's transportation segment was anchored by direct carmaker contracts. "The growth in the transportation industry... clearly has come in from the auto OEMs," Raghavan noted, adding that momentum was particularly strong among non-group automakers in North America and India.

By locking in multi-year, direct relationships with automakers, tech vendors are protecting their revenue base from ongoing supplier volatility. "Once that base gets protected, the leakage coming from the rest of the portfolio becomes smaller and smaller," Pai explained.

Structural Consequences for the Supply Chain

This procurement pivot underscores a fundamental operational shift across the automotive ecosystem. Tier-1 suppliers, historically responsible for bundling hardware and software modules before delivering them to assembly lines, are seeing their role in software monetization diminished. Meanwhile, automakers are centralizing software control to streamline over-the-air updates, reduce integration friction, and shorten development cycles.

The Way Forward

The shift toward direct OEM procurement signals a permanent evolution in how software is specified and purchased across the automotive sector. As automakers assert direct ownership over digital architectures and Tier-1 suppliers navigate tight margins, technology vendors aligned directly with vehicle manufacturers are best positioned to capture long-term engineering capital.
