Automotive Test Systems (ATS) is developing a battery testing laboratory at Talegaon, Pune, with a proposed initial investment of approximately ₹60 crore. The project was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar.
The facility is being developed in collaboration with a European testing and certification organisation and will provide battery testing and validation services to automotive manufacturers, battery producers, technology developers and start-ups. It is located within the same industrial complex as Energy in Motion (EIM) at Talegaon.
The laboratory will expand ATS's existing electric vehicle testing infrastructure in Bengaluru and Coimbatore. It is intended to serve the growing requirement for battery performance assessment, safety validation and product certification as electric mobility and battery technologies develop in India.
Battery Testing Across Vehicle Segments
The Talegaon laboratory will be equipped to test battery systems ranging from those used in electric two-wheelers to high-capacity battery packs for heavy commercial vehicles.
Its services will cover four main categories: performance, durability, safety and abuse testing. Performance testing will assess battery capacity, efficiency and operating characteristics under varying conditions, while durability testing will evaluate battery life, charge-discharge behaviour, reliability and performance degradation.
Safety testing will assess battery safety against applicable national and international requirements. Abuse testing will examine battery behaviour under extreme and abnormal conditions to support product safety validation.
The facility is intended to bring advanced testing capabilities closer to Indian manufacturers, potentially reducing their reliance on overseas laboratories and supporting product development and validation within the country.
