Ashok Leyland has secured an order to supply 1,937 buses to Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings (TNSTU), marking a significant expansion of the commercial vehicle manufacturer's presence in the state's public transportation network.
The order encompasses a variety of bus configurations designed for different operational requirements, including town services, mofussil routes, and long-distance SETC applications. All vehicles will be equipped with iGen6 BS VI technology and built on AIS 153-compliant chassis platforms to meet current Indian safety and performance standards.
The deal adds to Ashok Leyland's existing fleet of over 21,000 buses already operating under TNSTU. The company, which is part of the Hinduja Group, ranks as the fourth-largest bus manufacturer globally and holds the largest market share in India's bus manufacturing sector.
According to company officials, the new buses will feature several technological upgrades. High-speed mofussil and SETC models will include Electronic Stability Control systems, while urban low-entry and semi-low floor variants will incorporate automatic transmission and air suspension. All buses will be fitted with wheelchair ramps to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges.
Ms. Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head for Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles at Ashok Leyland, highlighted the importance of the Tamil Nadu market to the company's operations. Mr. Mohan K, Head of Bus division, emphasized the manufacturer's role in supporting the state government's public transportation infrastructure.
The buses will feature enhanced battery and alternator systems designed to support Intelligent Transport Management Systems (ITMS), with floor heights of 650mm on urban models intended to facilitate passenger boarding.
