After Cockroach Janta Party, E20 Janta Party Emerges With a Fuel Choice Demand

Days after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protests over the NEET paper leak controversy, a new citizen-led campaign calling itself the E20 Janta Party has emerged, seeking the option for consumers to purchase 100% petrol alongside E20 ethanol-blended fuel. The campaign describes itself as a consumer rights movement and says it is not seeking the withdrawal of E20, but rather greater consumer choice and transparency.

The campaign comes in the wake of the nationwide CJP protests. During the course of those protests, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, citing personal reasons. While the timing of the resignation sparked political debate, the minister did not attribute his decision to the protests.

According to a media note issued by the E20 Janta Party, the movement's central demand is that consumers should have the freedom to choose between 100% petrol and ethanol-blended fuel, rather than being limited to a single option.

"Our demand is simple. Every Indian should have the freedom to choose and purchase 100% petrol alongside blended fuel options," the group said.

The movement says it is not seeking subsidies or the withdrawal of ethanol-blended fuels. Instead, it is demanding the restoration of 100% petrol at fuel stations, transparent fuel labelling, the publication of clear data on the costs and benefits of different fuel blends, and independent studies on mileage, engine performance, emissions and maintenance costs, with the findings made publicly available.

The campaign is also beginning to move beyond social media. Political commentator Tehseen Poonawalla has announced a "Gaadi March" on July 31 against the E20 policy, while the Delhi Taxi and Tourist Transporters and Tour Operators Association has separately announced a march to Parliament on August 4, calling for an independent scientific review of the ethanol blending programme. The association has raised concerns over fuel efficiency, maintenance costs and engine performance, particularly for older vehicles.

The issue has also begun acquiring political overtones. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray recently said E20 petrol would be the next issue his party would take up after the paper leak protests, signalling that the fuel policy could emerge as another political flashpoint.

The Centre, however, has defended the E20 programme. The government has told Parliament that there are currently no plans to restore ethanol-free petrol and has maintained that E20 is a safe, cleaner fuel backed by scientific evaluation. It has also stated that there is no verified evidence of widespread engine damage attributable to E20 and has clarified that there is presently no proposal to increase ethanol blending beyond 20%.

With the launch of the E20 Janta Party, planned vehicle marches and support from sections of the transport community, the debate around E20 appears to be moving beyond the automotive industry and into the wider public and political arena. Whether the movement gathers nationwide traction remains to be seen, but it has already added a new consumer rights dimension to India's ongoing ethanol blending debate.
