Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) and the BMW Group have announced their collaboration on incorporating E2B, ADI's innovative 10BASE-T1S Ethernet technology, into the automotive industry. This strategic move positions the BMW Group as a pioneering original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in adopting this technology, aiming to enhance ambient lighting systems in future BMW vehicles.

The partnership between ADI and the BMW Group, dating back to 2018, has focused on integrating Ethernet connectivity directly to the edge of automotive networks. This effort aligns with the development of the 10Mbps Ethernet standard, 10BASE-T1S, by the IEEE802.3cg Group, with both organisations actively participating. The adoption of ADI’s E2B technology facilitates a shift towards all-hardware edge nodes by eliminating microcontrollers and centralising software processing, thereby streamlining software development and qualification processes.

The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on enhancing in-cabin experiences, with a particular focus on ambient lighting systems that meet the evolving expectations of drivers and passengers. The implementation of 10BASE-T1S E2B technology allows for a more dynamic customer experience, enabling easier system upgrades and a more user-friendly interface for software-defined lighting systems.

Additionally, this collaboration has sparked interest within the automotive sector, leading to efforts towards standardising a similar solution through the Open Alliance (opensig.org). ADI and the BMW Group, along with other industry participants, are actively pursuing the establishment of an Open Standard to broaden the adoption and implementation of this technology.
