74% of Indian EV owners pledge lifelong commitment to electric cars, survey finds

A survey of 1,330 recent electric vehicle owners in India by Park+ Research Labs unveiled that three-quarters of EV owners in India intend to stick with electric cars for life, signalling a robust shift towards sustainable transportation.

The survey, targeting EV owners who purchased their vehicles after January 1, 2024, reveals that economic considerations are driving the transition to electric vehicles, with 29% of respondents citing cheaper ownership as their primary motivation. Environmental consciousness (25%) and the desire to embrace cutting-edge automotive technology (21%) emerged as the other significant factors influencing purchase decisions.

Consumer confidence appears remarkably high, with 92% of owners expressing satisfaction with their EV purchase. This positive sentiment has been bolstered by manufacturer warranties, with most Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) offering five-year guarantees on battery packs, providing crucial reassurance to potential buyers.

However, the transition hasn't been without its challenges. The research highlighted several concerns among EV owners, with 24% pointing to inadequate charging infrastructure, 23% expressing range anxiety, and 21% worried about charging times. These findings underscore the ongoing infrastructure challenges facing India's emerging EV sector.

The survey also revealed interesting insights into factors building confidence in EV adoption. Increased visibility of EVs on Indian roads (36%), improvements in charging station availability (25%), and social support from family and friends (22%) were identified as key enablers of EV ownership.

A particularly noteworthy finding was the strong desire for community engagement, with 71% of owners expressing the need for EV clubs and communities. This social aspect of EV ownership appears to be a crucial missing link in the current ecosystem, the research found.

Amit Lakhotia, Founder & CEO of Park+Research Labs, said, “The Indian 4W EV story is still being written and the need of the hour is to engage with EV owners to understand their ownership experiences and expectations. From our survey which reached out to relatively new car owners, it has come to light that the owners are more informed, better researched and are not over expecting their EV's to deliver unrealistic performance. Additionally, an interesting touchpoint which has been missing for EV owners is a lack of EV communities/clubs, which would have allowed them to share their ownership experiences."

Looking ahead, respondents identified several areas for improvement in the EV ecosystem. These include the need for more accessible and safe public charging points (30%), development of faster-charging batteries (29%), and reduction in EV prices (24%).

As the country continues its transition towards sustainable transportation, addressing infrastructure concerns while nurturing community engagement could prove crucial in maintaining the current positive trajectory in EV adoption, as the research shows.
