Yamaha has brought the legendary RX name back to the Indian market. However, this time around the name isn’t reserved for light, wheelie-loving motorcyclists.

In a bid to gain greater volumes in the Indian market with the all-new 110cc Saluto RX, the Japanese major has stepped into a segment that accounts for just over 60% of the market.

Launched at Rs 46,400 (ex-showroom Delhi), the Saluto RX is powered by a single-cylinder, air- cooled, four-stroke, 110cc engine that delivers peak power output of 7.5PS at 7000rpm and maximum torque of 8.5Nm at 4500rpm.

Yamaha claims a fuel efficiency of 84kpl for the new motorcycle. A light kerb weight of 98kg will help it deliver better efficiency and performance. The model, which adheres to BS IV emission norms, will come in four colour options – Inspiring Red, Matte Black, Breezy Blue and Gleaming Black.

The model will take on Honda's Dream Series and the new Livo models, TVS Motor's recently launched 110cc Victor.

Roy Kurian, vice-president (Sales and Marketing), Yamaha Motor India Sales, said: "We are targeting the rural markets in India with our new model with a special focus on the youth population. This is a new chapter for us, very critical for our growth going forward.'

India Yamaha’s decision to roll out a 110cc model within the commuter motorcycle segment is clearly a strategic decision as by doing so, the company evades competition from Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto.

The Saluto RX will have to compete with Honda's existing 110cc models and TVS Motors’ all-new 110cc Victor to find a hold in the commuter market. It also stands to benefit from the expected sales resurgence for mass commuter motorcycles from rural India, following the Met's announcement of a regular monsoon season.
