Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer Volvo Trucks has set a new benchmark in the premium heavy-duty commercial vehicle segment with the delivery of its 10,000th truck in India today.

With this, Volvo emerged as the first European truck brand to cross the landmark of 10,000 premium truck deliveries in India. Growing demand from the mining sector has driven the company’s truck sales in India since its inception 17 years ago.

Pierre Jean Verge Salamon, president, Volvo Group Truck Sales in India, said: “Volvo faces with considerable confidence a future characterised by major opportunities in the industry, not least the demands and aspirations placed by the industry. We at Volvo Trucks want to maximise our operations with the range of technologically advanced transport solutions, offering total peace of mind to our customers and facilitate their growth and thereby continue to be the No.1 preferred truck brand in the premium European segment.”

He added that Volvo Trucks is the market leader with around 60% share in the premium truck segment in India. Over the years, Volvo has become synonymous with the mining and construction industries where the 8x4 concept introduced in the mining segment has become the industry norm and the innovative 10x4 Dump truck concept introduced in 2012 has also established itself.

Salamon continued, “With the gradual turnaround the economy is witnessing, this milestone of our 10,000th truck delivery is a reiteration of the need for such technologically advanced solutions in the market. We are looking at exciting times and we are ready to meet these opportunities.”

The company’s landmark 10,000th truck – a Volvo FMX 440 8x4 I-Shift – was handed over today to the mining service provider Mahalaxmi Infracontract, which has been buying Volvo trucks since 2005 for its operations in the mining and irrigation sectors.

Volvo Trucks currently has over 150 touch-points across the country including state-of-the-art workshops and service support centres.

A S Rama Rao, senior vice-president and head (Sales, Marketing & Aftermarket), Volvo, VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), said the company sold 5, 000 units of trucks from 1998 to 2009 while the remaining 5,000 unit sales has come during 2009 to 2015. He said around 70 percent of overall truck sales came from the mining sector while the balance are spread across Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) and other transport applications.
