Volkswagen India bats for sales, launches Polo, Ameo, Vento Cup Editions

With the Cricket World Cup 2019 starting today, with England taking on South Africa in the opening match, Volkswagen India has rolled out a new special edition of the Polo, Ameo and Vento.

Volkswagen knows how big a deal cricket is in India. In the past, the company has offered ‘IPL’ editions of the Vento, and now, to coincide with the start of the Cricket World Cup 2019, Volkswagen has launched Cup Editions of the Polo, Ameo and Vento. Prices for the Cup Editions undercut those of the Comfortline variants they’re based on – the Volkswagen Polo Cup Edition costs Rs 649,000, the Ameo Cup Edition costs Rs 619,000 and the Vento Cup Edition is priced at Rs 924,000 (ex-showroom, all-India).

What distinguishes the Cup Edition models are the Cup-themed stickers running along the sides, the chrome-finished Cup badge on the front fender and mock leather seat covers with the Cup logo. Also new for the Volkswagen Polo Cup Edition are 15-inch ‘Razor’ alloy wheels. The Ameo Cup Edition runs on 15-inch Tosa alloy wheels, while the Vento Cup Edition sports 15-inch Linas alloys.

As for engine options, the Polo and Ameo Cup editions will initially only be available with the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol motor that develops 76hp and 95Nm of torque, while the Vento Cup will only feature the 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol motor, which puts out 105hp and 153Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard on the Cup Editions. Diesel versions of the Cup Edition models are set to follow.

In terms of competition, the Volkswagen Polo rivals the Maruti Suzuki SwiftHyundai Grand i10 and Ford Figo while the Ameo takes on the Maruti Suzuki DzireHonda AmazeHyundai Xcent and the Ford Aspire. The Vento, meanwhile, rivals midsize sedans such as the Hyundai VernaMaruti Suzuki CiazHonda City and Skoda Rapid.

Speaking on the introduction of this special Cup edition, Steffen Knapp, director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, “In India, cricket is not merely a sport, but a religion. It is the equivalent of soccer in Germany. The world over, for Volkswagen, sport has played an integral part of our business. It not only brings in unity across the country but also displays passion, inspiration and excitement. Keeping this spirit in mind, we have launched the special Cup edition that showcases true sportsman spirit through its performance, power and precision across our product portfolio. We aim to reinstate the cheer and fun-to-drive experience among our customers this sports season.”

The Cup edition models of the Polo, Ameo and Vento will be available across all Volkswagen dealerships in India.
