Visteon’s Chennai plant wins green manufacturing award for sustainable practices

As a prominent advocate for reducing, reusing and recycling to lessen environmental impact, Visteon’s plant in Chennai, has been awarded the India Green Manufacturing Challenge (IGMC) silver medal for its eco-friendly work by the International Research Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM).

The IGMC rewards companies that have shown consistent progress in improving sustainability factors associated with their manufacturing facilities. The program encourages the adoption of green manufacturing processes through training, evaluation and recognition. The initiative delivers an enriched experience for participants with a motivation to generate an actionable roadmap for greener facilities and refined, viable processes of manufacturing.

Focusing on the strengths of the Chennai plant, IRIM organisers praised Visteon’s local leadership team for upholding the vision of the company through the growth of sustainable operations. The synergy demonstrated between leaders and their functional groups ensured colleagues were able to work exceptionally as a team to resolve challenges, while maintaining their priority of continuous improvement.

The approach by Visteon management to ensure an environmentally friendly facility was also commended. The site has added renewable sources of energy by installing solar panels that power nearly a third of the site and has taken up initiatives that led to the plant achieving zero liquid discharge.

IGMC officials applauded Visteon’s efforts toward emerging technology adoption, highlighting how recent and best-in-class solutions have been implemented in order to cater to the changing needs of the customer in this space.

Commenting on the award, Barkathulla Khan, Visteon India Plant Director, Chennai, said: “The IGMC appreciated Chennai's focus on safety practices, compliance in observing stringent regulations and putting in place necessary personal protective equipment instructions throughout the site to ensure minimal-to-no safety breaches. I would like to thank every colleague at the facility for their cooperation, vision and application on the wide range of procedures that contributed to this significant sustainability award.”

Additional Visteon recognition included the level of automation and robotics introduced in operations to reduce human error and consequently ensure defect-free products. Visteon's welfare drives – evident through zero percent attrition in the "workmen" category – were also highlighted.

The management was honoured for its involvement in addressing the business needs of growth and development to become a technology leader and hub of operational excellence while maintaining a clean, safe and prosperous working environment across the plant.
