TVS Motor Co, the sole moped manufacturer in India, is learnt to have filed trademark applications for two names which will most likely find their way onto the electric version of its popular XL 100 moped.

The XL 100 moped, priced between Rs 44,999 and Rs 59,695 (ex-showroom, Delhi), is one of TVS’ longest-running models and is the sole petrol-engined mopeds sold in the country.

The two names bearing the ‘XL’ moniker in the trademark filings open the door to the likelihood of TVS working on a battery-powered XL model. The sustained popularity of the XL 100 can be gleaned from the fact that the model continues to sell in big numbers.

Between April 2023 and February 2024, the TVS XL has sold 440,936 units, up 9% on year-ago sales of 404,753 units. In FY2023, the TVS XL had sold 441,567 mopeds.

With the success of its all-electric iQube scooter, which has sold over 250,000 units since launch in January 2020 and over 100,000 units in just the past six months, TVS could be looking to expand its EV portfolio on two wheels, while using the well-known XL brand. Considering that TVS has filed these patents in January 2024, it looks to be early days for the E-XL / XL EV project and there are no details or official company confirmation regarding the same.

Currently, there is only one electric moped on sale in India – the recently launched Kinetic E Luna  priced between Rs 64,990 – Rs 74,990 (ex-showroom, Delhi).
