British premium motorcycle manufacturer, Triumph Motorcycles has today added two fresh variants to its adventure tourer portfolio – the Tiger XRx and the Tiger XCx.

Both these new models will be imported into India as Completely Knocked Down kits (CKDs) and assembled at the company’s Manesar (Gurgaon) facility. While both these models will be powered by Triumph’s responsive liquid-cooled, in-line three-cylinder, 800cc engine, the Tiger XRx and the Tiger XCx are focussed at on-road and off-road riding applications respectively.

While the CKD operations of these adventure tourers will help the company cut down on their prices, the Tiger XRx and the Tiger XCx will come for Rs 11.60 lakh and Rs 12.70 lakh respectively (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi). This is in comparison to the ex-showroom (Delhi) price of Rs 12,34,360 of the Tiger 800 XC, which used the same engine and was imported into India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU).

However, interestingly, the company now plans to phase out the Tiger 800 XC model from its India portfolio soon. The model, however, will be delivered only to the pending bookings across the country.

The company’s adventure tourer portfolio, therefore, will now comprise of three models – the Tiger XRx, the Tiger XCx and the bigger sibling, liquid-cooled, in-line three-cylinder, 1215cc Tiger Explorer XC, which will continue to be imported into India as a CBU model. The Tiger Explorer XC comes for Rs 18,75,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

However, to make up for the outgoing Tiger 800 XC, Triumph Motorcycles plans to introduce another model – the Tiger XR, which will again be powered by the same 800cc engine. The Tiger XR, which will join the company’s adventure tourer portfolio as the fourth model, will come as a CKD model, and will be priced at Rs 10.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It is expected that the company will roll out the Tiger XR in another 3-5 months, depending upon the assembly capacity at the Manesar facility.

While the company now has a portfolio of 13 bikes in India (9 CKD models and 4 CBU models), with the incoming Tiger XR soon, it will have 10 CKD models of the total 14 bikes on sale in India. This clearly highlights its intent of aggressively tapping the evolving demand for premium bikes in India.

Company officials say that they have started accepting the bookings for the new Tiger models from today. “The bookings for the upcoming Tiger XR will, however, commence when the model rolls into the market in some months,” an official told Autocar Professional.

Vimal Sumbly, managing director, Triumph Motorcycles India (pictured above), said, “Triumph Motorcycles has had a dream run in India over the past one year. Over the last one year, we have seen a growing interest in the adventure category. To address this emerging need in the Indian market, we have launched two new variants, which will be assembled locally through the CKD route in India.”

The company has recorded sales of over 1,300 units in its first year of operations in India. It currently has 10 operational dealerships across the country, and plans to add two more later this year.
