Toyota Kirloskar Motor has had a good domestic market outing in January 2021. The Bangalore-based carmaker has announced total passenger vehicle sales of 11,126 units in January 2021, which translates into year-on-year growth of 92% (January 2020: 5,804 units).

For the April 2020-January 2021 period, cumulative sales are 65,058 units, down 33.7% on year-ago sales (April 2019-January 2020: 96,706) but most of the FY2021 seen the industry badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic

Commenting on the month’s performance, Naveen Soni, Senior Vice-President, TKM said, “The new year has started on a positive note for us. Our wholesales have been very encouraging and the booking orders have also witnessed a significant rise. We launched the new Fortuner and Legender and are humbled by the tremendous customer response for both the models. This shows the continued trust and confidence in the Fortuner, which has been the segment leader since its launch more than a decade ago. Moreover, the new Innova Crysta launched in November last year, has also received an overwhelming response from the market.”

Glanza, Urban Cruiser drive past 50,000 milestone
Meanwhile, the first sales milestone for the two Toyota-Suzuki models – the Glanza hatchback and the Urban Cruiser SUV – has been achieved. The two products have cumulatively crossed total sales of over 50,000 units till end-January 2021.

As per Autocar Professional’s statistics, combined sales till end-December 2020 were 44,801 units (Glanza 37,201 and Urban Cruiser 7,600). The balance 5,199 units to help cross the 50,000-unit milestone have been sold in January 2021.

While the Glanza, which is based on the Maruti Baleno, clocked its best monthly sales in October 2020 (2,978 units), the Urban Cruiser has averaged 2,533 units a month since October 2020. A spurt in Glanza sales in the post-lockdown era has seen its share in Toyota's total sales increase. Priced at Rs 701,000-896,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Glanza forms the entry point to the Toyota range. Importantly, it is drawing new buyers – new customers have contributed as much as 40-60%to the premium hatchback's sales. Also, a key  differentiator for drawing new buyers into the Toyota fold is the Japanese carmaker’s customer experience.

The Urban Cruiser, priced between Rs 840,000 and Rs 1,130,000, ex-showroom, Delhi, was launched on September 23, 2020, marking Toyota’s entry into the hot and happening compact SUV market. It is based on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, which is one of the top-selling UVs in the country and for a long time the largest-selling sub-four-metre compact crossover since its launch in 2016.
