As Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) readies to officially launch its new Glanza next week, the Bangalore-based Japanese OEM has a total of 2,666 units in its dealerships as of end-May 2019.

As is known, Maruti Suzuki supplies the Glanza, the Maruti Baleno-based hatchback, to TKM from its Gujarat plant. While 364 units were despatched in April, another 2,302 units were despatched in May 2019.It is reliably learnt that Toyota Glanza pre-bookings have commenced ahead of the June 6 launch and dealers are accepting pre-bookings with the booking amount set at Rs 10,000. TKM's dealer partners across the country have begun making provisions for the new model – including staff training and stocking of the car – ahead of the official launch.

The Glanza, which is a badge re-engineered Baleno, is Toyota’s first new product under its joint venture with Maruti Suzuki in India. It will be followed by the sharing of other cars.

Two engine options, both petrol
The Glanza will be launched in two variants (both higher-spec versions) and three engine-gearbox combinations – an 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol-MT; an 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol-CVT; and a 90hp, 1.2-litre Smart Hybrid-MT.

As far as fuel economy numbers go, the Glanza V MT will deliver 21.01kpl, the G MT (Smart Hybrid) is rated at 23.87kpl, and CVT has a claimed 19.56kpl figure. These mileage figures are identical to that of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

Both engines will be BS VI-compliant right from launch. Toyota will also introduce mid-hybrid tech on the Glanza with the 1.2-litre K12C DualJet engine. This is the same engine debuted on the Baleno recently. This motor develops 90hp and 113Nm of torque and will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Additionally, there will be one more 1.2-litre petrol engine, the K12B, which delivers 83hp and a similar 113Nm of torque. This engine will be available with a CVT gearbox and a 5-speed manual.

The Toyota Glanza will come with features like automatic climate control and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system replete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation and voice commands.

Safety features will include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and a reverse camera, along with speed and seatbelt warning systems, to name a few.

When it arrives in showrooms, one of the Toyota Glanza’s main USPs over its rivals (like the Maruti BalenoHonda Jazz and Hyundai i20), will be its longer 3-year/unlimited kilometre standard warranty pack. Considering the Glanza variants are expected to be priced at a premium over their respective Baleno variants, expect Toyota to price its hatchback in the Rs 800,000-900,000 (ex-showroom) bracket.

As reported by Autocar India earlier, Toyota is expected to offer a three-year/1,00,000km warranty as standard; the same package is also offered on other Toyota models in India.

In a market full of changing buyer preferences, India Auto India and industry pundits will be keenly observing the sales performance of the Glanza.

Meanwhile, news has just come in that TKM has sold a total of 12,138 units in May 2019, which marks de-growth of 7 percent (May 2018: 13,113).

Market leader Maruti Suzuki India, which is seeing a poor run in the market, sold 121,008 units last month, down 25 percent YoY (May 2018: 161,497).
