Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd (SAMIL), the principal holding company of Samvardhana Motherson Group, has acquired 100 percent of MS Global India (MSGI) from the Korea-based MS Group.
MSGI is an Rs 350 crore profitable Tier 1 supplier to leading global commercial vehicle OEMs. Through its manufacturing facility in Chennai, it is currently engaged in the cabin-in-white (pressed sheet metal business) and frames for chassis for commercial vehicles. Further, MSGI has the exclusive license to use MS Group’s hot stamping technology in India.
The acquisition of MS Global India will see SAMIL enter a new vertical of sheet metal parts with focus on hot stamping, a lightweighting technology for high-strength, sheet metal parts. This technology augurs well towards lightweighting of vehicles and will also find increased use in electric vehicles.
The technology from MS Global India and the spread of Motherson Group’s operations and client portfolio means that the business can be accelerated many fold in a short span of time.
Commenting on the acquisition, VC Sehgal, Group chairman, said “We look forward to the opportunities that this step in a new direction will bring us. We believe that there are many synergies at play, the most important being that it increases our offerings in terms of content per car, as these parts are used in both passenger and commercial vehicles.”
The $9.1 billion Samvardhana Motherson Group is a supplier to all major car manufacturers in the world. The Group is a leading global supplier of exterior rearview mirrors for passenger cars and of plastic modules to the European and Indian automotive industry. It currently has market leadership for wiring harnesses for passenger cars in India. The Group provides full system solutions right from product design to prototyping, tool manufacturing, molding and assembly to sequence-in-line supplies.
The Group’s automotive product portfolio comprises electrical distribution systems (wiring harnesses), automotive rearview mirrors, molded plastic parts and assemblies, injection molding tools, molded and extruded rubber components, modules and systems including cockpits /IPs, door trims, bumpers, lighting systems, air intake manifolds, pedal assemblies, HVAC systems, vehicle air conditioning systems, roof hatches, cabins for off-highway vehicles, machined metal products, cutting tools, thin film coating metals, IT services, design engineering and CAE services.
The Group, which has over 230 facilities supported by design centers and support offices spread across 37 countries, has also invested in technologies that provide manufacturing support, including compressors, paint coating equipment, auxiliary equipment for injection molding machines and automotive manufacturing engineering services.
