The Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)-backed Classic Legends today revealed the new 293cc engine that is set to power the incoming premium motorcycles branded under Jawa.

The new single-cylinder powertrain is built using the architecture of the 296cc engine used in the Mahindra Mojo motorcycle. According to the official communication, the 293cc Jawa engine is liquid-cooled and will be scalable to the incoming BS VI requirements. It would produce maximum power output of 27bhp and peak torque of 28Nm.

It is understood that the engineers based in India as well as in Italy have been jointly working on the engine to achieve certain characteristics such as flat torque curve, good mid-range power delivery, exhaust note and others typically identifiable with the classic Jawa motorcycles. The incoming Jawa-branded motorcycles will cater to riders with a taste for retro-classic genre.

“Working closely with one of the world’s leading engine specialist at the technical centre in Varese, Italy, not only did we build an engine with a near flat torque curve and generous mid-range, but also a motor strong enough to last a lifetime. However, it was not just the aesthetics and power delivery we tried to engineer. The unique exhaust note of the old Jawa was something that we were in love with and we wanted our engine to have a unique sound, given that replicating the tone of a classic 2-stroke on a modern-day 4-stroke would be a big challenge. A maverick team of sound engineers in Italy worked extensively with us through countless cycles of harmonic pipe combinations and multiple other permutations to discover a sound that was worthy of the new Jawa,” the release quotes.

The Jawa brand is expected to be introduced in a few months riding on a few motorcycle models, targeting different customer tastes and genres. According to the company, the longer-term roadmap of Classic Legends would be to open an ecosystem of immersive lifestyle experiences for its customers.
