P Kaniappan: “Adapting technology to the Indian market with localised support is crucial.”

It’s one year since India adopted BS VI emission norms. With the industry still not completely out of woods, in terms of the slowdown and the lockdown due to Covid-19 impacting sales further, the cost of adopting a new technology becomes very important.

Speaking at the Autocar Professional virtual conference, ‘Meeting Emission Challenges’, P Kaniappan, MD, Wabco India, and Chairman, ACMA Sub-Pillar on Regulations said, “Adapting technology to the Indian market with localised support is crucial. Industry has been successful in not just complying to regulation but also meeting at a price-point that market can adapt. Developing local capabilities is crucial.”

With a hint of pride he added that, “Being BS VI-compliant surely has brought Indian products at par with the existing global standards.”

He believes ACMA’s role in creating capabilities for the evolving the required ecosystem is  commendable and will play an important role in encouraging local development of technology, “The component industry is preparing for alternative fuel systems and electrification of the auto industry. It is likely to evolve in facilitating guiding the country to clean safe mobility.”

According to him, “Localisation is one of the crucial ways to manage cost while adapting to new technologies. Developing the ecosystem and creating an appropriate business case is important.” He pointed out that the, “the semiconductor shortage is perhaps an opportunity for India to look at developing local capabilities in a holistic manner.”
