Mumbai-based Strom Motors, an electric vehicle start-up, has rolled out its flagship product, the Strom R3 as a personal mobility solution. The company plans to produce only a limited number of units of the three-wheeled vehicle this year.

The company was founded in 2016 by Pratik Gupta and Jean-Luc Abaziou, with an aim to make car ownership economical and promote usage of EVs for daily use. The made-in-India for India vehicle is targeted at working professionals, fleet owners, and families looking for mobility within cities in a 10km radius.

Strom Motors claims the R3 is certified by ARAI and that it has filed patents for its Vehicle Control Unit (VCU). The EV uses a 48V battery system, resulting in an additional 5-10 years' second life for the battery packs, in applications like UPS storage and emergency backups.

Strom Motors claims the R3 has a range of around 200km on a single charge, can accommodate two passengers and offers a mileage of Rs 0.40 paise per kilometre. The company claims that fully charging the vehicle will take about just three hours.

It also has a 4G connected diagnostic engine onboard that allows owners to track the location and status of charge, as well as get a complete health report of critical components like brake pads, motors, and electronics. The deliveries for this vehicle are slated to begin by the start of 2022.

The start-up has opened pre-bookings for customers in the Mumbai and Delhi NCR region for Rs 10,000; early customers get upgrades of Rs 50,000 which includes customised colour options, a premium audio system, and three years of free maintenance.

The company claims it has seen a very strong market response to the R3 and has received orders over $1 million (Rs 7.4 crore) in the first four days since bookings opened.

Pratik Gupta, co-founder, Strom Motors said, “We at Strom Motors are feeling euphoric by the response received in the first four days of the opening. Our aim is to make EVs affordable and accessible for all across India. Looking at this great response, we believe we will be able to achieve our goals and trigger wide-scale adoption.”
