Maruti Suzuki India, the passenger vehicle market leader, has released its September 2020 despatch / sales numbers and they point to robust growth – 147,912 units (33.9%).

While this also means that the company has beefed up inventory in anticipation of the festive season, the fact is that the bellwether of the industry is back in action and firing on all cylinders. Coming on the back of strong August 2020 sales (113,033 units, up 21.3%), the September numbers augur well for Maruti and the industry in general.

The Alto and S-Presso sold 27,246 units, which is 35.7% YoY growth (September 2019: 20,085), indicative of the fact that demand has returned for these entry level hatchbacks.

The six-car pack of the Wagon R, Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire have cumulatively sold 84,213 units, up 47.3% YoY (September 2019: 57,179)

1,534 1,715 -10.6%

The Ciaz sold a total of 1,534 units, down 10.6% (September 2019: 1,715) but the number is better than the 1,223 units sold in August 2020 (-23.4%).

The utility vehicle segment, a market which is seeing plenty of action, sees Maruti Suzuki post good numbers. The quintet of the Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza and XL61 sold 23,699 units, up 10.1% (September 2019: 21,526),

The two vans – Eeco and Omni – together sold 11,220 units, up 12.8% (September 2019: 9,949).
