Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) launched the Imperio, a premium pick-up, in Mumbai today. Developed to cater to small and medium business transportation needs, the Imperio is priced at Rs 6.25 lakh (ex-showroom Thane, for the single-cabin BS III variant).

The Imperio has been conceptualised and developed in-house by M&M’s engineers at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, investing Rs 70 crore for the same. Production of the pick-up will be undertaken at the Chakan plant. The automaker may also introduce a CNG variant in the future.

The Imperio replaces the Genio pick-up in India. The Genio will, however, continue to be exported to foreign markets.

Speaking at the launch, Pravin Shah, president and chief executive (Automotive), M&M said, “The Imperio lays a strong foundation for an entirely new generation of pick-ups. We have identified gaps to further consolidate our presence in the SCV segment. A result of extensive consumer insights, the Imperio reflects the changing aspirations of a commercial vehicle buyer.”

The Imperio’s highlights include a distinctive front grille and 16-inch radial tubeless tyres. It also features fuel smart technology, independent front suspension, brake with LSPV, keyless entry and telematics compatibility.

The pick-up also comes with plush interiors, 2-DIN music system and power windows. The vehicle is powered by a 2.5-litre direct injection engine with common-rail technology, delivering 75bhp and 220 Nm torque with a claimed mileage of 13.55 kilometres per litre. The Imperio’s payload is 1,240 kg.

The Imperio is available in two model variants of single cabin and double cabin and three colours – Lava Red, Verve Blue and Arctic White.
