India Yamaha targets speedier market traction with new FZ range

Pricing for the new FZ FI starts from Rs 103,700 and Rs 107,200 for the FZS FI (ex-showroom Delhi).

Yamaha Motor India has launched its new range of FZ Series motorcycles in India. The new 149cc motorcycle comes with a fuel injected BS VI engine, a new colour and other updated features. Pricing for the new FZ FI starts from Rs 103,700 and Rs 107,200 for the FZS FI (ex-showroom Delhi).

While the new FZ series gets a side-stand engine cut-off switch, the FZS FI model additionally gets Bluetooth-enabled Yamaha Motorcycle Connect X launched in October 2020. The bike’s weight now stands reduced from 137kg to 135kg, thereby improving ride and handling. 

All models in the new FZ (149cc) series are powered by single-channel ABS, LED headlight, 140mm wide rear radial tyre and two level single-piece seating. The Bluetooth connected solution in the FZ FI will offer several features like Answer back, E-lock, Locate my bike, Hazard.

Motofumi Shitara, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group of companies said, “FZ is an iconic brand of Yamaha and in India, we want to recreate its excitement every year with additional features and new offerings. Last year, we launched the Yamaha Motorcycle Connect X app which was accepted well by our customers. We have decided to make it a mandatory feature for our FZS FI models.  With the upgrade of FZ series, we have completed the upgrade of all the models in Yamaha line-up with Side Stand Engine Cutoff Switch.”

FZ as a sales driver
In the April-December 2020 period, Yamaha India has sold a total of 172,030 units of the FZ and SZ series (150cc) which comprises 115,647 units in the domestic market and 57,083 exported units – proof that these bikes are major sales drivers for the Japanese OEM in India.  

The company sold a total of 187,118 motorcycles in the first nine months of FY2021, which gives it a 2.60% share of the bike market. In scooters, with sale of 180,188 units, it has a 5.81% market share. In the overall two-wheeler market, the cumulative 367,306 units gives it a market share of 3.41%.
