ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday for its Rs 60,000-crore investment initiative to increase production capacity of its Hazira plant in Gujarat, from 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 15 MTPA.

The company said in a statement that it will accelerate the development of downstream facilities to produce value-added steels to reduce India's reliance on steel imports.

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change approved AM/NS India's Hazira expansion project after a detailed environmental impact assessment. According to the company, it has long-term ambitions to raise its capacity to 30 MTPA by 2030, supporting the government's National Steel Policy which envisions doubling domestic capacity to 300 MTPA by 2030.
