Once again exports have proved to be a winner for the Pune-based Bajaj Auto. Even as demand in the domestic market has dwindled due to Covid-induced lockdowns in several States across India, the Pune-based motorcydle major has notched strong export numbers in May 2021.

Bajaj Auto, for whom exports are a key growth driver, shipped a total of 180,212 motorcycles, compared to 60,342 units sold in India. Of the total 240,554 motorcycles sold in May 2021, exports account for 75% of the total, clearly proving how the company is buffered against difficult domestic market conditions.

The same holds true for the first two months of the new fiscal year FY2022. Total two-wheeler sales are 588,727 units, comprising 401,815 exports and 186,912 domestic sales. Do the math and exports account for an overwhelming 68% of total sales.

Year on year, Bajaj Auto has posted a much improved performance. In pril-May 2020, when India and the world was just about beginning to feel the growing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bajaj Auto had shipped 105,521 units. Cumulative April-May 2021 exports of 401,815 motorcycles is a massive 281% YoY increase and point to a return of demand in Bajaj Auto’s key export markets.
