India’s Automotive Mission Plan 2026 is targeting revenues of US$ 200 billion by 2026 and $70 billion worth of auto component exports. If this ambitious target is to be met, made-in-India auto parts have to be of not just good, but of consistently outstanding quality. Is this achievable?

Yes, if the industry across Tier 1-2-3 levels embraces a culture of quality. We reveal the findings of the ACMA-McKinsey & Co study ‘Winning with Quality and Innovation’, which was part of ACMA’s 56th annual convention in New Delhi. ACMA also honoured the best suppliers for FY2015-16 – find out who the best are across manufacturing, quality and productivity, technology, exports, supplier development and HR.

Indian industry also needs to invest in disruptive R&D. As Mahindra & Mahindra’s Dr Pawan Goenka says, “While we are innovating as OEMs and suppliers, India is nowhere near fully leveraging the potential that we have in innovation in India.” Apex industry body SIAM’s annual convention saw captains of industry in an upbeat mood, thanks to buoyant vehicle sales in the past few months. The convention saw speakers urge OEMs to pursue the path of sustainability. End-of-life vehicles, electric mobility and BS VI norms will be some of the trends which will shape the next decade for the auto industry in India.

Covestro AG, another German manufacturer, has embarked on its next phase of growth with a sharp focus on the Asia-Pacific region and is targeting Indian automakers and suppliers for use of its innovative polycarbonate-based lightweight materials.

In the Interview pages, we speak to Vinod Aggarwal, CEO of VE Commercial Vehicles, on a range of topics including new M&HCVs, export of Euro 6-compliant 5- and 8-litre engines to the Volvo Group and the upcoming scrappage policy.

Vehicle sales in August 2016 have spelt good news for most manufacturers other than M&HCV makers. Get to know the sales stats and facts for the month.

All this plus a good bunch of exciting industry news pages.
