This month-long campaign was conducted from January 10 to February 9 in and around 20 road projects of Ashoka in West Bengal, Orissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, and Maharashtra.
Every year the company celebrates ‘Traffic Safety Month’ with a focus on encouraging road safety practices amongst employees as well as road users. The major highlight of this year's campaign was the conducting of safety related lectures at over over 500 schools, considering that these youngsters would soon be driving/riding their own vehicles and it is important that they are well informed about traffic rules.
The campaign also included multiple activitiespasting of reflective stickers on trucks, bullock carts, cycles tractors etc. Use of mobile road safety message vans, public address systems, and distribution of safety message pamphlets helped spread road safety messages to scores of road users.
Ashoka has donated alcohol breath analyzers and speed guns to the police department at various locations. It has been observed that many truck drivers are unaware that they are suffering from poor
Vision, and are often involved in road accidents. The company conducted free eye check up camps for truck drivers. Likewise, human flagmen are exposed to dangers of being hit by fast moving vehicles. Ashoka installed robotic flagmen and other modern traffic diversion devices in order to avoid such accidents.
According to Ashish Katariya, managing director, Ashoka Concessions, “Safety is a collective
responsibility and through this annual initiative our aim is to encourage commuters, workers and drivers to help us in reducing fatalities and accidents on highways. We also conduct seminars at schools and colleges as they represent the future of our country. Change will not come overnight, but continual efforts will definitely make a difference.”
