After receiving orders for over 2,200 Viking buses in June from the government of Sri Lanka, Ashok Leyland has obtained another order of 630 buses from private bus operators. The order worth $17 million (Rs 104 crore) is backed by the Sri Lankan government.
Vinod K Dasari, managing director, said, “This order is further evidence of the confidence Sri Lankan customers have in our products through our JV company, Lanka Ashok Leyland.”
Established in 1983, the Leyland’s Lankan JV has supplied about 45,000 buses to the Lankan market.
Last month, Ashok Leyland received orders for around 4,000 buses, worth around Rs 1,500 crore, from several state transport undertakings (STUs) in India. Orders have been placed by the Calcutta State Transport Corporation, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, AP State Road Transport Corporation, Jaipur City Transport Services, and the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal.
The company will supply a mix of buses that include the JanBus, the Janbus Midi and ultra-low- floor buses.
According to SIAM, Ashok Leyland has sold close to 3,000 buses in the April-September 2014 period.
